This is so important today more than ever. We live in a digital world and it’s so easy to be lost in the social driven online society. I order my groceries online, I pay my bills online, I bank online and I reach out to friends all online. In business, it’s more about emails than phone calls sometimes and I do get, ‘don’t call me just text me with updates’ from clients. I don’t think I ever use my phone for actually talking. Very strange but this is our world now.
This digital element of convenience is actually making us lose our human element side, even in business. I sometimes have the need to talk with people just so I don’t forget how to speak properly. I am forgetting how to stay human.
For me, the key benefits of joining or creating your own community.
- As I mentioned before, its about sharing ideas, gathering opinions and building relationships. This is a means for us to keep learning and adapting to our ever-changing industry.
- It’s about leadership initiative, mentoring and being part of that community, especially if you create your own community. As you build your community, you can also give back through volunteer service, pro bono work or donations to help those around you.
- And finally, it’s keeping in touch with our communication behavioral side. This means interacting, speaking, connecting, interfacing and using all five senses instead of just sight.
In the end, it’s all about balance. We cannot escape our digital world, even if we tried but we can’t lose perspective of our human element. It’s our human element that defines who we are and what we are capable of doing.
